THE GODS
The belief system in Nevriande is very loose, and has developed more and more over time. For those who believe, these deities created and nourish the land and all those on, below and above it. Theology is something that is a large spectrum within Nevriande, though all ends of it -- excluding extremists -- are relatively accepted and normal within society. It is just as socially acceptable to turn a cold shoulder to belief as it is to warmly and fully embrace it, though some groups and families may have their biases and preferences. A character's religious belief can be on a spectrum, ignoring religion or dedicating their entire lives to it-- it's all up to you and how you'd like to involve yourself!
Those in Tales of Nevriande are more than welcome to contact an admin about creating their own religion with its own beliefs and/or gods that can be added to this page! They must be respectfully made and properly structured to be approved.
Nevriande's Creation
The story of Nevriande begins with an entity known as Siv, a god born from loneliness. For countless years, Siv searched for companionship among the stars and galaxies, but found no others who could share his space. Overcome by his solitude, Siv made a profound sacrifice. He took his own two eyes, blinded himself, and allowed them to become the Sun and Moon, giving birth to two children, Soleia and Lumin. Soleia would tend to the sun, basking the world in warmth, while Lumin cared for the tranquil moon. Siv, by sacrificing his sight, created a world to soothe his loneliness, and Nevriande was born.
The name "Nevriande" comes from an ancient word for ‘story’, for Siv envisioned this world as a place of many narratives, where creatures could live out their own tales and intertwine their lives. He imagined Nevriande as a world full of curiosity, a living story for him to observe with tentative love.
As Siv and his children began to shape the world, they summoned four new deities: Aelwyd, the god of earth; Keahi, the goddess of fire; Fisk, the god of water; and Zepharin, the god of wind. Together, these four elementals wove the land into a beautiful tapestry, creating the earth, mountains, oceans, and skies that would sustain the creatures of Nevriande. With each step they took, life flourished: earthly mammals walked upon the land, winged avians flew in the skies, and resilient sealife filled the oceans.
Once the world had taken form, the three gods - Siv, Soleia, and Lumin - celebrated their creation by dancing upon the land. With each celestial touch, a new variety of canine and feline species emerged, blooming beneath their paws. These deities taught their creations to thrive, survive, and eventually build their own societies. As time passed, the world of Nevriande began to evolve. The deities observed their creations, noting both their successes and struggles. Recognizing that the world needed additional guidance, the gods decided to add more to their pantheon.
Zepharin, the ever-changing wind god, believed that whimsy and unpredictability were essential to keeping Nevriande vibrant. To bring this balance, he created his own child, Venturi, a godling of mischief, cunning, and luck, to sprinkle some spontaneity into the lives of the people. Aelwyd and Fisk, who had fallen in love over the ages, agreed that the land needed eternal caretakers. They created Theron and Jurgen, brothers who would govern the seasons and the land’s cycles, ensuring that the balance of nature would endure throughout the ages. Keahi, the goddess of fire, saw the untamed passion within her domain - a passion that, like life itself, could grow wild and destructive. She created Heda, a goddess who understood the delicate balance between life and death, and who could guide her people through both, offering strength in the face of adversity.
With this expanded pantheon in place, Nevriande flourished under the watchful care of its divine family. Siv, however, decreed that his children and their descendants should not interfere directly with the fate of the world or its inhabitants. The stories of Nevriande were to be written by its people, not the gods. But, the gods were allowed to offer their blessings and guidance to those who proved worthy, gently nudging the fates when needed, and guiding the world from the heavens above. Thus, Nevriande became a land of stories, of endless possibility, and the gods watched over it with tentative curiosity and love, knowing that their creations would shape their own paths and write their own fates.
THE PANTHEON
Below are descriptions and images of the deities in the pantheon. Clearly the characters have never seen what the deities look like. However, for the sake of world-building and just drawing some fun designs, I've added some drawings of them that I believe they'd be interpreted as. They are often imagined as chimeras of various different animals, mostly based loosely off of mythology, folklore or just plain ole regular critters!
